Transport gets someone from A to B. That’s not too complicated. But when it comes to healthcare transportation, there are many differences—mostly in how the costs are reimbursed.
It can be complicated to arrange healthcare transportation and request reimbursement. Fortunately, Staxi has extensive experience with various forms of contract transportation and can support your application. Feel free to contact us to discuss your specific needs.
Why choose healthcare transport?
A taxi sounds simple: from A to B. But with healthcare transportation, it also depends on who pays, how the reimbursement is handled, and whether you use a PGB or WLZ indication. That’s exactly where Staxi makes the difference.
You always ride privately—no detours or extra stops. Our fleet includes regular cars, minivans, and wheelchair-accessible taxis.
Healthcare transport for care providers
Are you a care provider looking to transport clients collectively—say to day programs or treatments? Staxi would be happy to help. We have extensive experience with group transport in healthcare and are happy to work with you to create a tailored solution. Contact us to learn more.
Will my healthcare transport be reimbursed?
That depends on multiple factors: your insurance policy, your indication, and the purpose of your journey. Below, we explain the most common scenarios.
1. Commuter transport by taxi
If you’re in rehabilitation or have a medical reason preventing you from traveling to work, the UWV (or your employer) may reimburse taxi transport. These situations are usually temporary, which is why flexible planning is essential. We maintain regular contact during your journey.
How to apply? Visit the UWV website using your DigiD. Employers can also request a quote from us.
2. Transport using a PGB (personal budget)
Do you receive a personal budget (PGB)? Then you can arrange your healthcare transport independently. Staxi is registered in the PGB portal.
After approval of the care agreement, Staxi will handle the rides and provide a monthly overview. We can also enter this into the portal for you. The SVB pays us directly, so you don’t have to advance any costs.
3. Day programs or daycare transport
Transport to a day program or children’s day center is often covered by the WLZ or Youth Act. If you have a PGB under these arrangements, you can choose Staxi to handle your transport directly.
What is seated patient transport?
This type of transport is to and from the hospital or specialist, reimbursed via the Health Insurance Act (ZVW). Prior approval from your insurer is required. The conditions are strict, but there are exceptions (hardship clause).
With Staxi, you’ll always travel discreetly and reliably in your own taxi. You won’t share with others or wait unnecessarily. We also try to assign a regular driver (or team) to your trips. After each ride, you’ll automatically receive a receipt to simplify your reimbursement.
Reimbursement for seated patient transport
Be sure to request prior approval from your insurer, or you risk not being reimbursed.
Conditions for reimbursement
The rules are very strict. Check the Zorginstituut Nederland website or that of your insurer for detailed info.
If you don’t meet the standard conditions, you may still qualify under the hardship clause for long-term treatment. Factors include:
- How many months you’ll need transport
- How many days a week
- How many weeks per month
- Distance (km) per one-way trip
Staxi is TX-Certified
Staxi holds a TX quality mark, which means we’re officially recognized as a care transportation provider. When you book our healthcare taxis, you may be eligible for reimbursement. The amount depends on your insurer, your policy type, and any supplemental coverage. If you need help figuring it out, we’re happy to assist.

Veelgestelde vragen
What is healthcare transportation and when do I need it?
Healthcare transportation refers to non-emergency taxi rides for medical purposes, such as hospital visits, rehabilitation, or day treatment. It’s often used when public transport or driving is not an option due to health reasons.
Is my medical taxi ride reimbursed by insurance?
That depends on your health insurance, your indication, and the purpose of your trip. For seated patient transport (Zittend ziekenvervoer), you usually need prior approval from your insurer.
Can I use my personal budget (PGB) to pay for healthcare transport?
Yes, Staxi is registered in the PGB portal. After approval of the care agreement, we can handle your rides and even help submit your monthly declarations.
Can employers or the UWV arrange work-related healthcare transport?
Absolutely. If you’re in rehabilitation or have a medical need, your employer or the UWV may fund commuter transport. Contact us for a quote tailored to your situation.
