The fastest way to get to the airport
When you’re about to go on holiday, the last thing you want is a stressful journey to the airport. Your bags are packed, your passport is hopefully in your pocket, and there’s one thing you definitely can’t afford to miss: your flight.
So, what’s the fastest way to get to the airport?
Train, car or taxi?
It really depends on where you’re travelling from and what time your flight leaves.
The train can be a quick option if you live close to a station with a direct connection to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. But you still have to get to the station first. Add a couple of suitcases, an early morning departure or a change of trains, and suddenly the journey isn’t quite as convenient.
Driving yourself gives you more freedom, but you’ll also need to park at Schiphol and make your way from the car park to the terminal. Depending on where you park, that can add quite a bit of time.
A taxi takes you straight from your front door to the airport. No changing trains, no searching for a parking space and no dragging your suitcase through public transport.
When is a taxi the fastest option?
For a door to door journey, taking a taxi can save quite a bit of time.
Your driver picks you up at the agreed time and takes you directly to Schiphol. This can be especially useful when:
- your flight leaves early in the morning or late at night;
- you don’t live close to a train station;
- you’re travelling with a lot of luggage;
- you’re travelling with several people;
- you don’t want to spend time parking or changing trains.
If you happen to live next to a station with a direct train to Schiphol, the train may well be faster. But when you look at the entire journey from your front door to the terminal, a pre booked taxi is often one of the most direct options.
What time should you leave for Schiphol?
How early should I arrive at the airport? You are not the only one asking that question. Don’t base your departure time on the normal driving time alone.
If Google Maps says the journey usually takes 35 minutes, that doesn’t mean you should leave exactly 35 minutes before you want to arrive. Traffic, roadworks or an accident can easily add time to your journey.
Give yourself some breathing room. Having an extra coffee at Schiphol is a lot nicer than spending the entire journey staring at the clock.
And remember that arriving at the airport isn’t the end of the journey. You’ll still need time to check in, drop off your luggage, get through security and walk to your gate.

So, what is the fastest way to get to the airport?
There isn’t one answer that works for everyone.
If you live next to a station with a direct connection, taking the train might be quicker. But if you live further away, have an early flight, are carrying luggage or simply want to travel directly from door to door, a taxi is often one of the easiest and most direct options.
And when you have a flight to catch, saving time isn’t the only thing that matters. Knowing that your transport is already arranged makes the start of your journey a lot more relaxed.
With Staxi, you can book your taxi to Schiphol in advance for a fixed price. Then there’s only one thing left to worry about: whether you really packed everything.
