This year for the 43rd time, the ‘Jordaan Festival’ takes place at August 25th and 26th. Since 1975 this is the place to be for admirers of traditional Amsterdam folk music.
Maybe you’re familiar with names such as André Hazes and Johnny Jordaan. They are by far the most famous names in Dutch folk music. Since both performers passed away, unfortunately we cannot enjoy their live performances but surely they’ll be present in spirit.
Of course, new stars rise when old perish. This year, Peter Beense and Mick Harren, among many others, will make sure Jordaan Festival 2017 will be one to remember.
The festivities take place at the ‘Appeltjesmarkt’, right next to Marnixstraat. On August 25th, you can enjoy performances by Danny Froger and Dries Roelvink. Fun and games from 19:30 till midnight. On Saturday, August 26th the festival terrain opens at 12:30. Grab a beer and try to sing along with Ramon and Peter Beense, Mick Harren, Quincy and many more. The amazing Karin Heesbeen show ballet will also perform.
Monday evening, starting at 20:00, the Jordaan Festival will be concluded in the De La Mar Theatre. On this special night the Jordaan Ensemble will perform traditional folk songs in traditional folk attire. Experience Holland at it’s most Dutch.
For the closing night, tickets can be bought for €12,50. The Jordaan Festival itself has always been free of charge and it still is. However, there are VIP tickets available for Friday (€20,-) and Saturday (€30,-).
From its start in 1975, the Jordan Festival took place at Elandsgracht. After 28 years, the premises got to small and the party was moved to Westermarkt. People living around Westermarkt complained about the music so for 10 years now, the Jordan Festival is located at the Appeltjesmarkt, at the bus station Marnixstraat.
The festival only gets a small subsidy and is financed mostly by sponsors.
