On the 19th of November, Amsterdam welcomes Sinterklaas.
Sinterklaas, also known as Sint Nicolaas, looks a lot like Santa Claus, but they’re not entirely the same. Actually, Santa Claus was based on our Sinterklaas!
In the Netherlands, we celebrate the name day of Sinterklaas, the patron saint of children, on the 5th of december each year. However, Sinterklaas already arrives in November.
This year, Amsterdam welcomes Sinterklaas on the 19th of November. True to tradition, Sint Nicolaas arrives from Spain on his boat ‘de Pakjesboot’. He will navigate the river Amstel, starting from De Omval in Amsterdam Oost to the Scheepvaartmuseum.
The boat ride starts around 10:00 am and will load along the Weesperzijde and Ceintuurbaan, across the Sarphatistraat through the Amtelsluizen at Carré theatre.
The Pakjesboot will make a right at Nieuwe Herengracht en continue its journey along the Hortus, Wertheimpark and Entrepotdok to the Scheepvaartmuseum at Kattenburgerstraat, where Sinterklaas followed by his helpers the Pieten, will arrive around 11:30.
Parade to Dam square
The party doesn’t end there, but will go on starting 12:30. Sinterklaas will mount his famous horse Amerigo and continue his route, followed by his many Pieten and a decorated float. The route will follow the Valkenburgerstraat to the Waterlooplein, continuing on the Blauwbrug to Rembrandtplein, where Sinterklaas arrives around 13:30.
The parade goes on to the Dam, passing Muntplein and Rokin. Festivities at the Dam square go on until about 15:30; there will be music and other activities.
Additionally, at the Scheepvaartmuseum you can enjoy Sinterklaas festivities until 16:00. Get some special Sinterklaas themed make-up done and check out the Pakjesboot up close.
All in all, it’s going to be a fun and cheerful day, full of music, dance, Sinterklaas candies and off course many many Pieten.
