Just a few days till September 3th… Then participants swim the distance of 2 kilometers in the canals of Amsterdam for the Dutch ALS foundation during Amsterdam City Swim (ACS).
You read that right: swimming in the Amsterdam canals. Did you know our Queen Maxima and famous Dutch swimmer Pieter van den Hoogenband once participated?
Swimming for the ALS Foundation
By competing in the Amsterdam City Swim or by sponsoring one of the swimmers, you also financially support the ALS Foundation in its battle against ALS disease (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. So the purpose is dual; it’s about fulfilling your personal goal, while your involvement is also supporting the ALS Foundation.
The sponsors raised a total amount of € 2.000.000,- in 2016 and a lot of money is needed for research. This year will be the 6th edition of this successful event. At the 1st edition in 2012 there were about 1.000 competitors, but in 2016 this amount had been increased to 3.000.
During the Amsterdam City Swim you will see competitors of all different ages and levels. After the finish, traditionally the ceremony and the handing over of the cheque will occur. This is always a good moment to memorize the persons to whom we organize the Amsterdam City Swim and raise our glasses afterwards.
Besides swimming in the canals, there are a lot of other activities for the public, like the Amsterdam City Swim for Kids, there will be performances alongside the race-track and an After Party later on. The Amsterdam City Swim is open for everyone to watch and a lot of spectators will make this event even more fun.
It’s possible to encourage the swimmers alongside the race-track but you will need an entry-ticket for the starting area. Please make your booking in advance if you want to be sure of a good spot to see the finish of the contestants.
The Amsterdam City Swim could not exist without the financial support of sponsors and the help and effort of lots of volunteers. The Municipality of Amsterdam and the Foundation of Amsterdam are also making an important contribution to the Amsterdam City Swim.
