Facts about Rotterdam Airport

Rotterdam The Hague Airport opened its doors in 1956. At that time, the airport was called Zestienhoven Airport. Test flights were to start on September 17th 1956, but one week earlier, a plane unexpectedly landed at Zestienhoven. The Danish pilot Grum-Schwansen had seen the airfield on an aviation map but did not know it was not operational yet.

Until 1990, Zestienhoven airfield was the property of the city of Rotterdam. As of November 1st that year, management was transferred to the Schiphol Group. The name changed from Zestienhoven to Rotterdam Airport. In February 2010, the name changed again. Since then, the airport is known as Rotterdam The Hague Airport.
